What is that White Stuff???—Yup, it’s Snow!!!

November 11th, 2008

Yikes!!! It’s here. Mind you not in any huge amount, but still, here is our first snowfall in Alberta. Thankfully it’s not freezing cold to go along with it. In the city it’s mostly just on the lawns and such-it’s still melting from the sidewalks and the roads are just slushy. Geez, it sure seems like the winter season came fast this year.

Buddy went out this morning and there was snow on the bottom step. He leans right over and sticks his nose in it, looks up, looks around. Then he runs down and pounces on the lawn, sticks his nose in as far as it will go and proceeds to push his way through the snow around the yard. It’s hilarious!

Stay tuned this winter. I’ll post you the ones when we get a foot of snow at one time.

We dnt have snow in Southern parts of India :) Northern parts are more snowy :)

It looks so ccol :D ) I love it!

  2. Literary Feline says:

I think if my dog stepped outside and saw snow, he’d turn right around and go back in the house. LOL Snow is something we only see from a distance on the mountaintops here. The photos are lovely.

  3. Dar says:

Veens, I think I might like snow too if I never actually had to have it. lololol-especially when it gets to be a lot and really icy.

Wendy, that’s too funny. A lot of dogs even here hate the snow. Mine has loved it from day one. When it gets really cold here I put on his booties and coat and we go outside and toss his ball. It falls into a snow pile and he pounces in to get it-snow is flying everywhere. That part of the snow and winter is fun. I’ll have to remember to take some pics of him in his booties for everyone.

  4. bermudaonion says:

We had one snowfall last winter and it looked about like that. In all my moving around, I’ve never lived anywhere that gets much snow.

  5. bethany says:

wow, it must be cold there!!! we are always just rain, rain, RAIN here :) It makes things so green, but also makes for some really gray days.

  6. Bree says:

Dogs are too funny in the snow. Mine does the same thing yours does. It’s hilarious!

  7. Joy says:

We had our first snow yesterday! It wasn’t quite that much, but it did stick. I love the snow. :)

  8. Mary says:

Dar, I’ll post pictures of the snow when we get it. Last winter we were just an inch shy of 100 inches. Very pretty but made for a long winter. Yes, take pics of Buddy in his booties : )

  9. Anna says:

The first snow of the season is always magical. The subsequent snow storms are just annoying. Granted, we don’t get too many major storms in the D.C. area (and that’s fine by me), but I grew up in New England. Last year, we mostly had ice storms. And people around here don’t know what salt and sand are.

  10. Wendi B. - Wendi's Book Corner ~ Rainy Day Reading in Seattle says:

Wow! That is amazing!! I just love the snow, and now that our son is almost 2, I can’t wait for him to be playing in it!! Hopefully we’ll get some this year.

    :) Wendi

  11. softdrink says:

Ooooh, pretty! Of course, I haven’t lived in snow since I was 8, so that’s easy for me to say.

  12. Dar says:

Kathy, I’ve lived here all my life so you’d think I’d be used to the snow-but no, I’m not. lol.

Behtany, it’s not too cold yet. Right now, in your temps, we’re at about 30 above Farenheit. In the dead of winter though we can get to, in your temps, 20-40 below zero. It’s freezing. You can’t be outside for more than a minute without something freezing if it’s not covered. Truthfully though, I wouldn’t enjoy rain all the time either. A lot of the days in the winter are sunny, just freezing.

Bree, it’s so funny to watch, isn’t it.

Joy, another one who loves the snow. I guess I don’t mind it so much as long as I don’t have to drive in it and I wish it didn’t get quite as cold as it does here.

Mary, that’s even more snow than us. Does it get really cold there. By the end of last winter we were probably at about 5 feet.

Anna, I agree. It looks pretty right now but once more falls I won’t like it. Plus the roads are ok right now which makes it not so bad. Here they don’t put out salt at all, only this sandy, gravel stuff and only after the snow has stopped and the streets are grated. Sometimes we can have snow for days and the don’t do anything. That makes for a really interesting zoo on the roads.

Wendi, it’s so cute to see little ones play in the snow. It’s so much fun for them. I hope you get some so he can have some fun this year.

  13. Dar says:

Jill, it is pretty. I’ll admit to that. I wish it had been a sunnier day then it would have looked really nice-it’s pretty gloomy to go along with the first snow.

  14. Marvin D. Wilson says:

Nice photos, Dar! Puts me in the spirit. (smile) We’ve had some flurries here in the thumb area of Michigan but nothing’s sticking yet.

  15. Michelle Moran says:

How beautiful!!! I’m completely envious. We’re still using air conditioning here in So Cal!

  16. Ti says:

Wow. That looks so pretty. Everything seems to come earlier this year but it is supposed to be 98 degrees here come Friday.

  17. Janel says:

I wish I could bring Cooper to visit. He’s never seen snow before. The kids are very impatiently waiting for the first snowfall like this so they can play with the dog.

  18. Dar says:

Marvin, ours has lasted all day-it’s still there. It’s gotten pretty cool throughout the day.

Michelle, what I wouldn’t give to be using air still. I’m envious of that! I’m wearing winter duds-lol.

Ti, I’m so jealous of warm weather right now. It’s so quiet out today-I think everyone is staying in and staying warm with this first snowfall.

Janel, I’d be curious to know what Cooper does when it snows-see if he’s as hilarious as Buddy.

Nymeth, once a decade would be lovely. lol. Yes I can imagine for those who don’t get it like we do how nice it seems and there are a lot of people who live here who do like the winter. I’m just one of the crazy ones who doesn’t.

  19. Ladytink_534 says:

Oh it’s so pretty! Just like something out of a movie!

  20. Luanne says:

We had snow in ON two weeks ago!

  21. Trish says:

I don’t envy you one bit (we were still in the 80s this weekend…had a little cold front come in yesterday), but i do LOVE the way the snow covers the trees like that. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing–and stay warm!!

  22. Keyomi says:

its beautiful Dar. ENjoyed the pics. thanks

  23. Dar says:

Luanne, I saw that on the news. You had a pile of it. I was not envious of you at all.

Trish, thanks-lol. I am trying to stay warm. Went out for a bit today and had wished I had my ear muffs with me. It’s that chilly.

Keyomi, thanks so much. I love sharing pics :)

  24. Trish says:

That’s what I have the toughest time with–the ears! And the toes. If my head and feet are warm, I can handle the cold weather. How does Buddy like the snow?

  25. Toni says:

That is so pretty Dar. I bet it was cute to see Buddy rooting around in the snow. I think your yard looks so lovely.

  26. Shana @ Literarily says:

That’s a gorgeous picture, Dar. Is it your front yard?

Awwww, I can just see Buddy in the snow! He is so darned cute!!!

  27. Brenda Colleen Leyland says:

Hi! Just bumped into your blog…I’m a fellow Albertan! And I was thinking wintery thoughts myself after the unexpected, but totally gorgeous dump we woke up to on Tuesday.

You love to read, read, read….. my lifelong passion. I should take a picture of the piles of books I no longer have room for in my shelves…. so kindred spirit….I’ll come visit again.

BTW, your buddy puppy is adorable. I have a Miss Kitty…she’s not so fond of the snow.

  28. Dar says:

Trish, my toes are the same too and my hands-I have a lot of trouble with cold hands. Buddy adores the snow! He’ll play until he gets cold jumping in and out of snow banks. I wish you could see him.

Toni, thanks. lol-you’ve seen some of the pics in the last years of Buddy rooting in the snow. He’s pretty funny.

Shana, thanks. Yes, that’s one side of the front yard. The other side has a huge weeping birch tree that looks gorgeous when it snows but it’s way too big to fit in the picture. As for Buddy, the little bugger knows he’s cute too. lol.

Hi Brenda, nice to meet a fellow Albertan. I’m going to pop over and visit your blog soon. A kindred spirit indeed-piles of books with no where to go. lol-that’s me too. Thanks for the compliment on Buddy and please keep on visiting!

  29. J. Kaye Oldner says:

How neat! I miss getting the white stuff. :)

  30. naida says:

It looks so pretty. I’m so not ready for snow though…lol
    http://thebookworm07.blogspot.com/

  31. Dar says:

    J. Kaye-that makes me laugh. I wouldn’t miss it at all. lol.

  32. Dar says:

Naida, it is pretty but I’m not ready for it either. Today we had rain and snow mixed along with about 70km winds. It was not nice!

  33. Laura says:

How pretty! I love snow, but I can say that because here in Texas, we don’t have to deal with it very much. Your pictures make me want to snuggle up on the couch with a cup of cocoa and a good book!

  34. Dar says:

Laura, that is definitely the best way to enjoy the snow!

  35. April says:

What beautiful pictures!!! We have had some flurries here, but nothing that stays after reaching the ground.

  36. Dar says:

April, the snow does make a pretty picture I’ll admit. It already all melted. Tonight they’re forecasting freezing rain and flurries-not a good combination when temps are below freezing.
