Musing Mondays (Dec. 15)

December 15th, 2008

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post, hosted by Rebecca at Just One More Page, is about reading on the go…

I always like to have a book with me at all times – call it a nerdy grown-up security blanket – and rarely do I leave the house without slipping one into my bag (even if I KNOW I’m not going to have a chance to read it). Do you take a book with you? Do you take whatever book you’re currently reading, or do you have a special on-the-go book? And do you have a preference for a these types of book (paperback, hardback; short stories; poetry etc)?
My response…
  • I take a book absolutely everywhere, even if I’m only gone for a few minutes. How do I know I’m not going to get stuck in traffic and need something to do? I make sure I have a big enough purse to fit a book at all times-lol. I also listen to audio books in the car but I am prone to forgetting to grab the audio book on my way out but not the paper version. I always have 3 or 4 books on the go so when I do go out I just make sure to grab the smallest, lightest one.

How about you, do you always have a book with you at all times too?

absolutely! sometimes, i take more than one so i’ll have an option:) I am looking to get a nice big handbag that’ll hold a book as well.

  2. Nymeth says:

    “A nerdy grown-up security blanket”..perfectly put!

  3. Bookfool says:

Me, too! Well, most of the time I remember to take a book. For those occasions that I think I’m just going to run somewhere and back but it turns out not to end up as expected, I have emergency books stashed in the car.

  4. Mary says:

Me too. Too many times I’ve been stuck wainting with nothing to read. That makes me crazy.

  5. Felicia says:

I absolutely have a book with me at all times. I don’t discriminate,I take my book to work, on errands, even to my daughters games for half time.I never know when one of my students wont show up so if that happens I have a free block of time. (I’m a 1 on 1 reading tutor)
Before I buy a handbag I have to consider the size for a book to fit inside. All my purses can fit a book or two inside.

  6. Ti says:

I always have my current read with me but there are times where I will cart around more than one book. I haul a laptop to and from my car so I have one of those “wheelie thingies” so it will hold a ton of books too. LOL.

  7. Katherine says:

I too always have my current read in my handbag. It’s odd, but I’m very particular about the handbag I carry–it has to be large enough to carry a decent-sized ARC or hardback, but not so large that it’s cumbersome while travelling around.

    I always take a book with me too…lol :) it’s a must!

I always keep a book on hand too. You never know when you are going to be waiting. :)

  10. J. Kaye Oldner says:

Definitely! I can’t see leaving the house without an audio and a paper book.

  11. Ladytink_534 says:

Yep. My purse doesn’t feel like a purse without one!

  12. Melody says:

I tried listening to an audio book one time but just couldn’t get into it…I guess I still prefer holding a book in hand. ;)

  13. Veens says:

me too! me tooo! i have books that fit my purse at all times… i dnt have… i go buy ;)

:) all book lovers are like tht :)

i m yet to try audio books :)

  14. Dar says:

Ramya, I have several big handbags now. When I go out I throw everything into one of them along with my book and I’m good to go. Oh, I took the moderation off because it seemed to be confusing some people and they’d comment several times because they weren’t seeing it.

Nymeth, books are a security blanket, aren’t they? I always feel more comfy if I have one close at hand.

Bookfool, what a good idea-keeping a book stashed in the car for emergencies. I may have to find one of my favorites and do that.

Mary, there’s nothing worse than being stuck with nothing to read and I hate reading magazines that who knows how many people have already pawed through.

Fe, you just never know when you’ll have a chance to read. I read whenever I sit down even it it’s 5 minutes. I drive everyone nuts doing it but I don’t care. And yes the purse must be able to fit a book.

Ti, that makes it a bit easier with your wheelie thing. Some of those hardback books can get pretty heavy to lug around.

Katherine, that’s the thing. There has to be a happy medium between fitting the book but not being too heavy or bulky. It’s a struggle finding the right bag sometimes.

Naida, Kalea kane, I agree :)

J.Kaye, I only listen to audios in the car or when I go to bed at night. Otherwise it’s a paper copy but I do feel lost if I forget the audio for the car. I need to buy myself one to keep in the car permanently.

Tink, I agree :) It’s nice just to feel the bulk of the book in there. lol.

Melody, I’m the same way. I just mentioned to J.Kaye, I only listen to them in the car and at night. Otherwise my attention span for listening isn’t all that great. lol.

Veens, I’ve done that before if I did by chance forget a book, I’ve gone and bought one.

I take a book with me everywhere just in case. And whenever I forget is usually when I have time to read which drives me nuts :)

  16. Ramya says:

i was leaving for work in a hurry this morning and i forgot to get my book!!(eekkksss!!) for the first time, i sat in the shuttle not knowing what to do for the 40 to 50 minute commute! what would we do without books?? sigh!

  17. Bree says:

Always! You just never know and what are you to do if there’s spare time and nothing to read. Yikes. My teens are the same way.

  18. Anna says:

I definitely make sure I have a book for my work commute. I take an extra if it looks like I could finish the one I’m currently reading. Other than that, it depends on where I’m going. If I’m with my daughter, there’s no way I’ll have a chance to read. But I’ll take a book if we’ll be in the car for awhile or I’m going to a doctor’s appointment. I’ve learned the hard way that you never know how long you’ll be waiting and you don’t want to be bored!

I always have a copy or two of my book Across the Pond, one never knows when you might have a sale *grin*. Also I am starting to create (is that the right word) the next book and need to make sure I have the voice and the rhythm of the first book.
