After some technical difficulties, I am very pleased to welcome Emily Listfield, author of Best Intentions to Peeking Between the Pages today. I just posted my review of this book yesterday and I really enjoyed it-you can take a peek at my review here. For now, let’s sit back and relax and see what Emily has to share with us…
Best Intentions is a mystery based on a the most simple and yet most complicated question: How well do you really know the people you love?
The narrator, Lisa Barkley, is married to her college boyfriend, Sam. Now, years later, they live in Manhattan and have two daughters they are struggling to keep in private school as the economy begins to collapse around them. Men and women, I think, have a particularly hard time with the effects of financial pressure on a relationship. Sam doesn’t want to admit his insecurities, Lisa doesn’t want to admit her doubts. As they pull further away from each other, Lisa also begins to suspect Sam is having an affair.
Money envy. Resentments. Fear. Jealousy. There are not necessarily emotions we like to talk about it. (Frankly, most people would rather talk about sex and weight than their financial situation – and those aren’t exactly easy topics either!) But they exist.
In these trying times, so many of our expectations have had to change. We can torment ourselves with where we think ‘we should be’ or we can adjust. Sometimes, of course, we veer back and forth. We all have doubts, fears, suspicions – they may be romantic, they may be financial, they may concern our children or our lovers. But the real danger lies in not being honest about them.
