I’ve got one more book today that would be a great read for you and your book club and I’ve got 3 copies of it to give away courtesy of Valerie at Hachette Book Group. What is it you ask? Well it’s Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. I sadly haven’t had a chance to read this one but I’m looking to remedy that this year.
Here’s a bit about the book…
Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the US when she was young. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village–they’ve all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men–her own “Siete Magníficos”–to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over. Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresistible young woman’s quest to find herself on both sides of the fence.
This really does sound fantastic. I think there’s a lot to talk about as well within your book club like being a young woman living in a small Mexican village with the prospects being low where men are concerned. Not to mention being brave enough to leave her village in the hopes of repopulating her village and one thing that’s big to women everywhere – finding ourselves. I’ll post the Reading Guide when it’s up but in the meantime on Luis Alberto Urrea’s website there is a list of discussion topics for your book club to discuss which are just great.
